Sales Skills are Life Skills

I love the art of selling. LOVE IT. When I first entered the field of sales, the one thing I quickly grew to appreciate was the fact that anything I did to increase my ability in selling also increased my ability in life. Sales skills are life skills.

“There’s a born salesman!” I have yet to read, or hear on the evening news, of a lady who gave birth to a sales person. Or an attorney, or doctor, or for that matter an embezzler or swindler. Birth is given to boys and girls; everything after that is by choices made and skills that are learned. And sales skills are life skills.

“I am not ever going to be in sales!” Really? If you have ever been in a conversation in which you were trying to express an opinion or influence an event, then you were selling. The truth is that everyone is constantly trying to sell an idea, belief, proposition, opinion, or a goal. You use sales skills throughout the day, everyday. With your spouse, your kids, your peers, your neighbor, your parents, at the store, at the bank, at your church, when you buy a car or a house, or when you simply go out to dinner. Sales skills are life skills.

There is not an area of your life where sales skills cannot be a benefit. Teachers use sales skills. Preachers use sales skills. Police officers use sales skills. Mother Teresa used sales skills. Regardless of what you do, sales skills will improve your probability for success at motivating, instructing, encouraging, coaching, communicating with and reaching people. Sales skills are life skills.

In fact, every successful person is good at selling himself or herself.

Truly successful sales people have great listening skills. (Although my wife often questions mine!) Unfortunately, the image of a good sales person is a slick talking person who could sell ice to an Eskimo. However, just the opposite is true. The professional sales person wouldn’t sell ice to an Eskimo unless that ice was wanted and needed. And that would be determined through a series of questions and keen listening to determine the need. In fact, a true professional sales person will listen over three times as much as they will talk! (Again, my wife may disagree but it is true!) Sales skills are life skills.

There is not a single person in an organization that does not have an opportunity to sell for their organization. It is for that reason that I believe everyone in an organization should receive some training in sales skills. It takes very few positive results to more than pay for the investment! Think about the tremendous upside. Not only do you dramatically increase the potential of your sales force, but your employee’s confidence, attitude, and motivation greatly increases. Sales skills are life skills.

How to ask questions, listen intently, clarify a position or opinion, present a view, deal with objections, and reach a successful conclusion for all involved is the art of sales. What is there not to like and which of those skills do you not want to get better at and use throughout your daily life?

Have I mentioned that sales skills are life skills?

So, I was told I needed to find a sales rep.

I have been doing all the sales myself and it is killing me. I am a soft touch - I don't have the stones to be a real "Closer". I can admit it.

I own an advertising/marketing/design agency that specializes in the financial industry. We have been around for over 26 years and have a pretty good reputation. We are strictly B2B and since we deal with banks and CUs, we rarely exceed 30-day terms. Most of my sales come from referral or the website requests for information. Average sale on basic services for the year is around $200,000k to $300,000 a year (wehave a few that are larger and a few that are smaller).

Recently we launched a new product that has been getting a good response (10% sales close on cold calling). It is a high volume product and seems to be an easy sell. We are also about to launch a new product that should do even better than that. The commissions are pretty generous. Our in house team is making about $3k to $5k on 2 hours of phone calls a day. The problem is that I have my designers on the phone when they should be designing.

I talked to a collegue - she owns another agency - and she told me that she has reps in Texas and LA and the east coast. She has even stolen a client from me (first time that has ever happened). So she told me what I needed to do but not how to do it. I thought I would start here to see if anyone here had any suggestions.

+++New Incredible Tool to Boost Sales+++Take a quick peek! This is your life!

Hello, my name is Kane and I recently opened a Floatation Center in SF.
I got into sales 12 years ago at 21, and jumped off the deep end into timeshare sales.
Even used car lots bring people interested in used cars.
Timeshare brings people looking for a free gift...and that is it!
So I quickly learned the ropes in sales. To me it became the greatest analogy to life itself.
Holding on to what you believe in the face of adversity, and being open enough to share it with others.
I see mysell as lighting the path from old stale habits into new and exciting habits.
This is how lives are transformed from the mundane into the miraculous.
That is the desire of everyone's hearts!!!!

I am posting this "ad" to share with all those interested, an absolutely amazing tool to generate the sales, and create the life desired.
How does it work? Relaxation.

In a state of relaxation, one does not filter through old memories, but rather readies the space to create new memories or reinforce the desired memories. If you have ever been on a streak or in a slump, you understand the power of memories. When you are streaking, you want to remember the feeling (reinforce the memory), because it was why the sale was effortless. When you are in a slump, you want to replace the memory of failure with the memory of success, because it is the memory of failure that keeps you failing.

Floatation allows one to reach the deepest state of relaxation that has been researched. In this state one releases their subconscious blockage. This is the little voice/feeling that has been patterned for failure. This is what causes some to look at their next prospect with the feeling of looming failure rather than the anticipation of another easy sell. With this blockage released, one can simply remind themselves that they are so good at selling that they even sold themselves this failure and can now sell themselves success. When one is in this deep state of relaxation and remembers the great sales that they have had and the feeling that comes with, it imprints this memory deep in their subconscious to be activated the next time that they are selling. THIS IS THE INNER STRENGTH PEOPLE REFER TO!!!

This therapy is effortless, cost effective, and produces amazing results. This will not only transform your career, but will put your body into a state of health so that success can be enjoyed.

Stress = "Dis"ease, unhappiness, anxiety, tension, depression, etc.
Relaxation = Health, Happiness, Vigor, and a sense of Well-Being.

Thank You for your time and may it return to you in abundance.

Gratefully,
NEW! Tribe Review: Human Resource Management

"Human Resource Management (HRM) is a strategic and coherent approach to the management of an organisation's most VALUED assert - the people working there who individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of its goals" (Armstrong, 1999)

As a student of business and HRM for over 10 years, I firmly believe, an organisations most important asset rests with its people. People far out weigh any other resource. If the people potential is tapped into, and used in the right way, it can be of immense benefit both for the organisation and its people.

This is a forum for HR professionals, students, researchers and lecturers to discuss all aspects of Human Resource Management (HRM). Feel free to post your views or critiques on theories, concepts, models, policies, processes, practices, activities of HRM. Maybe you are a HRM professional and found something that’s worked in your organisation? Maybe you've studied a particular concept/theory and you want to share your views on that? Maybe you have your own theory? - Feel free to discuss because through discussion we all learn something.

How can we help each other?

After my weekly chamber of commerce meeting today- I ponder upon the different ways one can go about generating leads and clients for themselves. The purpose i want to evolve from this board is that we all learn from each other about our experences and day to day chores of dealing with the pressures of sales proffessionals and getting what we call "the closing" and as a result getting to the almighty dollar that we offer our sacrifice of time and effort. Let's discuss what works...buy telling us everything bellow

1) what do you do for a living
2) What is your target market
3) What are some obstacles you come across in dealing with your niche?
4) What have you learned from your experiences that can help others
5) What advice do you want to ask of members of this tribe?
We are here... we are listening...
Any thoughts?

Networking is a learned skill

Ok, really. How tough can networking be? It involves TALKING to people and I talk to people every single day. Why do I constantly need to learn how to network? Why do I need to constantly develop networking skills? Why is it recommended that I participate in GROUPS that only have a focus on networking? It just can't be that tough.

Networking is a LEARNED skill. It involves developing strong relationship-building techniques. These are taught. Just like mathematical skills and verbal skills. It is a common misconception that you should "know" how to network. After all, it's believed, networking is not brain surgery or rocket science.

But that IS a misconception. Without constant exposure to new relationship-building ideas, without exposure to different people, and different communication styles, without training in the field of networking, a business professional would suffer from some serious business development challenges. These challenges included but are not limited to:

1. A lack of ability to get past "gate keepers". A very common way to get past gate-keepers is through a referral from someone the gate-keeper knows and respects. Without strong networking skills, a business professional will be unable to generate such referrals.

2. Once past them, a challenge with getting an appointment with a decision-maker. Here, without strong listening skills and precise presentation techniques, the busy decision-maker finds it easy to end a conversation before it's started.

3. Once an appointment is made, difficulty communicating features and benefits to your prospect. People relate to different styles of communication in different ways. Usually, someone likes to be related to in the same manner that they relate to others. To use a different style can not only cause a delay in the presentation process, but can actually lead to the termination of an otherwise mutually-beneficial business relationship just because the STYLE was offensive to the recipient.

4. Even if all the above can be handled successfully, a difficulty in closing the sale. In an ideal networking relationship, both parties are concerned with learning about each other so they can best help each other. This skill makes closing a sale easier, since you have learned how to best help your prospect and your prospect has learned how you can best help them. The close is much easier then.

Any further comments?
